Helping Parents in Regional Areas Understand Reading Difficulties

Every year we visit regional communities to present our FREE workshop Understanding Reading Difficulties – why some children struggle and how to help. This is kindly supported by the Department for Education and provides regional parents with access to valuable information about learning difficulties.

Kylie Hallion, our SPELD SA Educational Presenter, recently visited Naracoorte. This is what she had to say:

“It was fantastic to be in the South East recently supporting the community with our “Understanding Reading Difficulties” workshops. Highlights included having a chat on ABC radio about reading, learning difficulties and the services provided by SPELD SA, conversations and information sharing and receiving a diverse range of questions.

It was also heartening to hear that a parent, who attended to gain information to help her child, commented that she learnt strategies that would support her own learning difficulties and her desire to undertake further study.

Comments from participants such as the ones below, make it really worthwhile providing this service.

“Fantastic information. Well explained without the jargon.”

“It was much more than about reading. I learnt about working memory and processing information.”

“I know more things to talk to my child’s teacher about now.”

We send a big thank you to the team at Sunrise Christian School for hosting us and providing a lovely space for parents to learn.

SPELD SA will be visiting many more locations this year, including Clare and Kadina first up in Term 2. If you would like to know if SPELD SA is coming to your home town visit our Regional Tours webpage.
